The opening ceremony will be held on 26 July 2024.

For the first time in the history of the games the ceremony will be held outdoors on the River Seine. Barges will carry the athletes down the river past spectators, sitting on the side of the river. They will travel 6 kilometres. There will be about 160 barges and boats carrying officials and performers along the river. For the first time too, the opening ceremony is free for many of the more than 600,000 people who will line the banks for the Seine. This is 10 times more than if the Opening Ceremony was held inside a stadium.

Mascots for the Paris games

The mascots are red caps! They are called Phryges. (Say: free-jes or freeze with a "j" sound) They are based on the Phrygian cap, a French symbol of freedom. Worn by people at various times in French history.
